Yeah, the Ashes of Urh'Rok one, not Embers of Rage. Those demon statues... I won't say using them at low levels is a "bad idea" because the only really low-level place where they spawn is the demonic starting zone, but treat it like NetHack fountain-quaffing or something - if you do it, pray for a good result but prepare for a reroll. (Midgame or higher, feel free to use them whenever, as far as I know it can't summon forge-giants or Champions of Urh'Rok)

I'm reasonably sure I got a forge giant once. Looking at the code, the only restriction is that it won't summon uniques.

It is, but I used a scroll. It seems to blink away when next to you so it doesn't actually destroy the forest (or I was really lucky).

Slime, Elf, Vaults, Depth

Elf is easy with great loot.
Vaults:$ as well.

Do spider > shoals > vaults 1-4 > elf if you have MR+++ > depths until you can't > vaults 5 > depths > zot

rPois is a must for Spider
Fly is very helpful in Shoals
Invis is extremely useful both in Spider and Shoals

Spider also tends to be much easier than Shoals.
You can't go Vaults until you have one rune.
You don't enter Slime until your character has AT LEAST gone though Vaults and Depths, and even then I feel like that's a bare minimum.
You shouldn't go Depths yet.
You shouldn't do Elf until you have decent MR. You can maybe manage the first floor only at this point, but nothing further than that.

Do a Lair Branch. Probably Spider. Then do depths.

The option of starting a new game after winning is purely for keeping track of win streaks/score.
As for the lore, well, I have no clue.
