If you can set up at least one of the engines, wire the solars, and "seal" breaches, you can play engineer.

Easiest way to learn is to try things out. If you're nervous about "ruining" someone else's round, start up a local server and practice at your own pace. Join rounds where there are already other engineers/atmos techs and ask them for help.

No matter what you do, someone will inevitably shit talk you. It's only a video game, and everyone has to start somewhere. Half the time, people shit talking are worse than the people they shit talk, which is why they're complaining instead of doing and getting better

Oh, and if I ever catch you wiring any of the engines into the grid, I will stripspace you in a welded locker. Solars should always be wired into the grid though.

a competent atmostech is something different and is relegated to wizard territory

you can fuck around with private/test servers if you want to have more practice, but honestly you can just make do with the wiki knowledge and eventually turn that into practical knowledge over time

playing MoMMI is a good way to learn how to do random engineering shit without having people yelling at you or having to do anything important provided there's already an engineer on the server (which there usually is, at least during amerifat hours)
