I've since assigned 1000+ CAS planes to the region. I hadn't realized how effective they are against just about anything seaborne.
The end goal is of course to achieve at least partial naval superiority so I can send troops over to England.

Did you use a custom start? I did something similar back before the tribal update fucked up viking raiders. I had invaded Lanka and southern India as norse vikings and immediately converted to Nestorian via concubine from Socotra. I eventually lost when I tried to go Messalian. I've never been able to reproduce anything similar in ironman despite my efforts, just curious how you did it.

I'm playing while using the CK2 Plus mod, with a mini-mod of my own design that puts a few of Nestorianism's holy sites in Southern India (corresponding with the location of St. Thomas's arrival in India as well as the site of his tomb). I then used a default start as the ruler of Mahoydapuram, the trade node county in the Indian southeast.
From there, I played normally as a Hindu character, hopping between vassalhood of various rulers before getting stronk enough to form the Kingdom of Tamilikam. Then, as a Hindu raider, I took a daughter of the ruler of Socotra as a concubine and had her do some education to give myself a Christian heir and a couple of male courtiers I could turn into vassals before he took the throne.
From there, I just rolled north, holy warring the subcontinent while keeping a careful eye on when they'd be vulnerable (declaring primarily during large claim wars among the Hindu rulers, or declaring on the occasional Jain ruler who wouldn't get much auto-help). I then formed the Deccan Empire title and tech-rushed Legalism to unlock Kingdom Viceroys.
