desu I used to play doturd way too much as well, then grew bored of the stalemate and decided to hop on smite.
I wasn't even sure I was going to stick with it, so used free gems to buy a god and her vp (kali) which I regret deeply now.

Anyway, the game is surprisingly fun. As some user said, it's an especially good time for newbies to join because hirez seems to be going for that angle. New gods and new "feature" make it easier and more fun to play as a nab.
It seems that the established playerbase is annoyed by the changes, though.

Regardless, been here for months, and desu I ended up uninstalling dota anyway.

Lane clear isn't something you should be able to build into too heavily with items, because it's such a huge part of what differentiates god's kits, especially with ability based adcs. Adc's in general will always be the problem child of builds, there is the least differentiation of all classes due to the reliance of auto attacks, so items ADC's build will always be the focus of nerfs and buffs.

Kali isn't really a fun pick, you have to like her a lot to enjoy playing her and she fell off again this patch.
I'd recommend the god pack but barring that, get the A tier gods from each role with favor. (I grind like 10k favor a week so it won't take long)

Smite is dying but the playerbase is steady, some would say it's rising especially with console players and referrals. Honestly the future of the game depends on the next few patches heavily but it's leaning towards surviving.
It'll feel alive to a new player, 1 minute or less queues and rarely do you have games with the same people so there must be a decent sized player base.
Stay away from ranked for a while, until you're certain in your ability to carry yourself
