It's not like you're going to get a better one at your level, but until 20 the levels still come pretty quick so if you want to go the mile with the gyarados, wait till you get a good one at 20

Doesn't matter, it's percentage based. Don't power up till you're 20+ and you plan on taking the mons with you forever.
Pure normal is better than the rest, psychic and vape are decent but they have nowhere near the retarded hp stat of chansey/snorlax. And given the state of bullshit gyms are in, as a defender you just exist to run the clock as long as possible since a good attacker can solo literally anything given they don't run out of time.

Anyone know pinsirs different attacks?

Moves reroll on levelup.
Specific normal mons (snorlax, chansey, lickitung?) are head and shoulders the best. They have tons of health and have very good movesets, notably zen headbutt which is one of the best attacks, and counters the only current counters to normal types (fighting and ghost mons).
Vaporeon has a very high cp gain, still decently bulky and has the best attack of the eeveelutions.
Psychic types get the best attacks, psycho cutter and zen headbutt, and don't have a lot of type counters (no natural dark pokemon yet, only bite floating around on shitty golbats).
Not sure that anyone has fully tested it, it seems to be fully random.

How do you tell what's good moves and what're shit ones

all of them have few pokemon/move types to counter them, high CP gains, fast and powerful attacks (gotta get lucky with the moveset tho), great to excellent HP pools
