Kinda this, but some people really do go full autist whenever Christianity or religion are mentioned. You see it a lot in real life as well, not just when people are shitposting on anonymous imageboards. Also your average Christian layman is just as retarded.

It sucks. I'm an atheist but in an earlier time in my life I was preparing for seminary. I've got a lot of knowledge about Christian theology, piety, and practice in my head, and nobody to discuss it reasonably with. The Christians are all "HURR IT'S NOT A RELIGION IT'S A RELATIONSHIP GO AWAY WITH YOUR BIG WORDS" and the atheists are all "HURR BEARDED SKY WIZARD. I FOLLOW BLACK SCIENCE MAN DESPITE HAVING EARNED C's IN EVERY SCIENCE CLASS I EVER TOOK AND NOT KNOWING WHAT THE FUCK HE'S TALKING ABOUT GO AWAY WITH YOUR BIG WORDS." The two sides don't realize how exactly the same they are.

I agree really, I didn't mean to imply that actual Christians were somehow faultless, just brought up the two groups that tend to shit up those threads. There's nothing wrong with someone who's interested in discussing it, whether they're religious or atheist, if they have something to bring to the conversation in a constructive manner, then I think that it's great and they should absolutely say it.

But sadly you end up with maybe one or two people who've actually even read the Bible in each thread, and the rest are just throwing around insults and exaggerations. The thing that annoys me in particular of the Christians in that thread a lot (and I'm Catholic) is people going "X is a heresy". We're not in the fucking inquisition, you aren't with the vatican at all, you just look retarded calling everything that you think is wrong heresy, this isn't a 40k LARP.

But yeah, most Christian posters here know pretty much nothing about the religion and just treat it like it's a badge of their inherent moral superiority to show off to everyone instead of trying to live it. I tend to find that most people who're Christian in real life tend to not be confrontational about it though, whereas most people who consider themselves atheist will often be much more so.

As I said though, it's not the topic people hate, it's that the same three or four points are made over and over and over, and they end up being full of shitposting and retards.

I agree completely with the first part, you can for sure discuss heresy in context, but going "That's a heresy" or "You're a heretic" is fucking cringeworthy and retarded. People use it to mean "I disagree with what you're saying", but it honestly does the same thing to me it does to you, whenever I see that shit I pretty much always just leave the thread.

Thanks. Basically what I'm getting at is that the well of this particular topic has been poisoned. I personally would argue that due to the nature of chanboards that it might have been poisoned to begin with but regardless of that the sort of discussion that has occurred on here regarding religion in general and abrahamic monotheism in particular has essentially dumped an industrial supertanker full of cyanide into the reservoir.

I think that's true for pretty much any topic here. Unless it's incredibly niche so that only people who really know their shit will be able to comment on it at all, it's going to be pretty much people throwing shit at each other in an attempt to convince the public that they're obviously smarter, rather than by actually demonstrating any knowledge. People don't discuss shit to learn about it and progress as people, they come here to argue and prove they're right.

Probably, but religious beliefs are things that are taught to people at a formative age typically and form an important part of their identity, which makes any discussion of such matters difficult to begin with. For the record, I'm an atheist and I fully recognize that I've been part of the problem in the past, am probably still part of it now and probably will continue to be part of the problem in the future, but I do recognize the problem.

Dude, even when I am fully channeling the unholy power of my fedora I wouldn't say something this stupid. Much of the outrage over that particular scandal comes from the catholic laity.

I don't really agree entirely. I was born into a family that wasn't really religious at all, never went to church, said grace or anything like that in the slightest, none of them are in any sort of organised religion, yet I'm now a Catholic to the best of my ability.

I think the issue is that people take their beliefs way too much to heart, and seem to think that people disagreeing is actually an attack on their person.

I wish there was a place where it was possible to discuss things in a calmer way, but generally even on smaller chans they tend to be quite hostile to outside influences, and it's very dependent on luck whether you find someone who's going to go insane at you for using the wrong wording or someone who's in the same position as you.

You do find constructive discussion here sometimes, I mean, we're managing to talk without insulting each other at the moment, but it's really quite rare compared to threads full of insults and the lowest possible quality discourse.

Well you see, you're not the typical religious person, tribalism is sadly still and probably always will be a fundamental part of human thought, and most forms of ideology are going to be things people become tribalist about, regardless of whether you're talking about the bible, or the communist manifesto.
