Zunbils and Bavandids in 769, Karen dynasty in 867, the Norse vikings in either. And of course there's the Emir of Derbent in 769, vassal to the Sultan of Armenia and (according to some historical sources, as well as the in-game dynasty tracker) descendant of the Sassanid dynasty that once ruled Persia. Starting as one of the few remaining Avar realms in 867 and trying to restore Avar rule to the Pannonian basin against the Magyars, Bulgarians and Bohemians is also an interesting little challenge.
As for what it's like to play as a vassal? Best way to learn is to try it yourself.

I was thinking, after peacing out in the Crimean war as Russia just after it had begun, that it's almost unwinnable.
Why? Because a player that knows what he's doing, will neglect military research in favor of cultural research, in order to get higher literacy. So, by the beginning of the Crimean war, your technology will be shit.
You might be able to earn a phyrric victory if you mobilize, but it will kill half your country. Also if you are very lucky and Prussia/NGF/Germany doesn't join the war, you might win a gamey victory by defending choke points.
But if the Germans join the war there is absolutely no way you can win the war, unless you are willing to destroy your country(it might take decades to recover). There is no point in even fighting that war.
