I think Generations has the worst early game from all of the MH titles I've played.

Nibelsnarf's duals are great against Kut-Ku and Malfestio. Ludroth's are probably about equal. The Gypceros duals aren't terrible. Snow Slicers would actually be good if you had anything to use them on. Twin Daggers are good enough, so are Petrified Daggers if you keep upgrading them.

Nothing in Low Rank really demands too much concern for blade choice, though. I'm just annoyed that Kut-Ku's duals are terrible the entire time. I might as well just upgrade them into the Garuga duals

Oh, Nibelsnarf's duals are all good against Glavenus in the Abyssal Mushroom quest. Gammoth and Mizu are basically the reasons I wish Kut-Ku's duals didn't suck. Snow Slicers were okay against Astalos, but I didn't actually mean to fight him with them when I did the Wyvern Egg quest, it just happened. There are probably better low rank options for killing him than those

This is my first Monster Hunter game.
The beginning has not been the most thrilling of experiences.
I was promised hunting, not running around bland environments collecting plants.

I wonder how long it's going to take people to realize just how few of those quests are key. Even if you do the village requests, there aren't many.

assist has better support gauge increase but shitty attacks and shitty skills

if you keep up the assault then maintaining 3 gauges for the boomerangs isn't a problem, so don't bother with assist

just stick with warrior/fighter

essential skills are the two boomerang skills and whatever attack skill you can fit in.

There's also a skill that massively increase your attack and defense if your cat goes naked, World's Strongest, look for it.

When do deviants turn ferocious? And ferocious is basically "this part takes more damage" right?

I don't know about "unlocked" but if your defense is hovering around 100~, you're a guaranteed two shot for Arzuros, and that's at best.
His hide is also pretty tough, you'll want a decently sharp weapon which you just don't really get in LR.

Azuros is actually one of the tougher fights. He's quick and hits pretty hard.

It's a lot of upkeep in hunt to reapply oils, and then you have to buy more after every hunt.
I mean I love it, it makes SnS a lot more fun and it's not quite as expensive as running a HBG.

Deviants don't go ferocious.
Ferocious means attacks from this part is going to hit you like like a freight train.
In exchange, your arts charge faster when you attack that part.
