I would say yes - it makes the movement look a bit more interesting. I figure the dots should have a light blue outline like the hexagon, though.

There's no skimming anything. You must focus on both. Focus on finish one first if you must.

just remember that plenty of games with average or less visuals have become hits because the game itself is good. Focus on gameplay and the user experience. Your art should exist primarily to complement gameplay.

I don't want to be rude so I'm not going to name it, but there was a game I really liked in DD and because it didn't have any graphics it seems like no one really payed attention to it. And I was one of the few ones who give him feedback.
But you can always make your game around arcade mechanics, like make it only with one life, short but difficult, nice art etc.

Programmers have to make systems-based games and artists have to make character-based games.

arcades have been dying since the late 90s because you can just play at home for cheaper

arcades are only good for games you cant have the machinery for at home, like DDR and lightgun games (but even then you can buy soft DDR mats and every major console has a lightgun-like device sooooo)

What does "style over substance" means?

Factions are now in: allies and foes. Shared enemies and rogue ships are also supported.

You can also see the player (blue-grey ship) using two weapons at once, the regular peashooter and the bomb-like attack.

Stacking weapons will be the main way to keep up with the red side's ever-increasing firepower. Allies will be occasionally available through calling reinforcements or attacking an enemy ship with a lucky shot of the Point of View Gun.

Does this look too difficult? Simply not fun? Feedback would be welcome.

The only arcade cabinets that still draw money are the ones with unique hardware needs that aren't practical to have in a home (loud rhythm games, certain lightgun games, physical challenges like hoop throwing, racing cabinets with wheels and trannies, etc)

I don't know, the shmup genre is oversaturated just like platformer, I highly recommend you to go for something different, like exploration, ship maintenance, terraforming planets, something like that.
