I think the parts have a separate defense value from the enemy. Add to that the way defense scales and depending on your damage output the parts often end up taking far less damage than the enemy.

Won't formation attacks kill the enemy quicker? I dunno, I tried using only normal attacks. No skills, no EX attacks, and I still failed fto break anything.
