Yeah the lightness definitely is a plus. Also I can flat foot the XR in almost any position while sometimes I have to tiptoe on the DRZ. Another thing is that I am a bit of a Honda fanboy. My first two bikes where an XR50 and then a XR 100.

Let's say I was looking at buying a fairly cheap bike that I plan on using for general cruising, a bit of fun in the twisties, and light off-road adventuring.
Let's also say that I'm mildly paranoid and would like something that, in a SHTF scenario, will be very reliable and economic, but still be able to haul around a fair amount of camping gear and a small jerry can or two.
What kind of bikes should I be looking at?
After about a week of riding the rebel i'm still loving it. Coming from a vulcan 750 it's just so much fun to rip around. took it freeway for the first time today and aside from getting blown around by the wind a bit it did just fine. For 800$ i'm a happy camper.
DL650 soon as you'll probably never take it off road much anyway.
