Its just the adrenaline of driving your car against someone in a completely open environment where you never quite knew was was going to happen. It had a mix of thrill and somewhat of a sense of discovery at the same time. there is also the competition side of it, people just racing for the hell of it, not proving something, just flatout racing for the fun of it. but those times are dead now.
