I'd say a '14 (maybe even '15-'16) Mustang GT would be the most bang for your buck, and you can get a low mileage used one for under $25k pretty easily right now.
If you want to with a hatch test drive the WRX, GTI, Speed3, and Focus ST.
If you want slightly smaller/lighter try the Fiesta ST.
I'd also drive the ND, and I guess a toyobaru just to be sure.

The WRX CVT uses a Kevlar belt, so apparently is much more reliable than the Nissan CVT, if that was what you were worring about. My biggest fear of CVT is how much stress that's going to be put on the motor, its going to be pegged at 6500 rpm and still accelerating with the turbo still in full spool. That cant be good for the turbo.
