I daily drove a first generation RX-7 for a couple years. It was breddy comfy for the most part, worst parts were the squirrely steering and the deafening wind noise at highway speeds. Maybe the MR2 is better there but the FB was not a highway machine

I've had 5 MR2s and never snapped over. Even with autoX and gymkhana. Wet, dry, snow, or anything. Never kicked out with out me want wanting it to.

That's stupid as fuck, every car from this era that hasn't been spot on maintained, stored during winter and have an engine with high mileage is going to have problems here and there (Or a shitload depending on the owner). I don't know why you were surprised by anything else.
It's easy, go there, try it out and see for yourself. If you buy a car up front without even having it inspected and without test driving it, you are a legit idiot and that goes for ANY car that you are buying from a private owner even the recent ones.
I wanted to buy a first gen MR2 a few years ago, the car looked top notch in photos, but trying it revealed that it required a lot of work on it, something the guy had ommited to mention in his ad because he wanted to sell it fast and expected someone to just buy it. He put a LOT on pressure on me to buy it, but I ended up not buying because the cost for repairs exceeded my budget by a long shot.
But yeah, don't ever expect to buy any recreative vehicle without having to put some work into it eventually. Sports cars are toys and even if they are very reliable, they tend to fail in certain places. So if you don't know at least the minimum on how to work on cars or don't know people who can do it for you for relatively cheap, don't even buy an old sports car and get yourself a daily with a bit of punch instead.
Face it, there are people who just don't have it in them to own genuine sports. You're not buying a reliable machine, you're buying a toy. Accept this fact.

Make sure your oil pressure is normal, compression checks out across all cylinders, hoses and belts all replaced, new fluids, make sure nothing leaks, make sure there's no rod knock, make sure the rust isn't so bad
But be prepared to have it be a money pit.

make sure the headlights work. They can be a nightmare sometimes.
Mines been fine so far. Had 200k when I got it. Starter is going though. Its the original I believe, gonna rebuild it. Its really enjoyable to drive even just in the city. Having that 4age right behind your head is pretty awesome.
The aw11 has a steering bushing that needs to be replaced pretty often. Mines bad and has a lot of play. Not had any other problems so far. had to bleed coolant a little when I first got it though and fix up things from the previous owner.
