You don't have to really fear that in GoD2 as you have tank whole time even two once you get them. And there won't be need to use weird party setups like GoD1 chaos-route either. Only time you miss a character temporary for extended period is during early parts of both magic and meka routes.

Check the services and check if you can run other installshield setups. If you cant, then you got win files corrupted. The command SFC can fix it.

How am I supposed to beat the caterpillars?
I fight them with a wooden sword that does either 1 or 0 hp damage when they have 60 hp, and I only have 33% chance to hit them. They dodge most of my attacks, suffer no damage from half of my hits. I don't have enough money to buy a better weapon. The game starts me up with 100 gold.
Must be something I'm missing there, so what is it? The only other thing to do was the lamp oil fetch quest, that gets me neither gold or xp.

Doesn't that game use APs to boost your stats or some shit ? It's been a while but you're probably neglecting that.

You get a certain amount of AP to boost dodge, block or attacks every few turns. The enemy has certain turns when your attacks are most likely to hit so you dodge or block with the minimal amount of AP then attack with as much AP as possible on those turns.
