I really think a lot of stuff is still in the game data like aggroable NPCs, outpost quests and pets being able to level up as they kill monsters.
We just have to wait modders do their work.

guys im confused the very first quest is not working, I have core fragments but the quest is not updating its still telling me to find the energy source. Also can I easily change my game to casual later on if I want?

The energy source isn't actually the core fragments. It's the teleporter to the outpost. You'll need 20 CF to get it working, though. Just follow the compass on the top-right of your screen.

Ship upgrades? Just recruit random NPCs, until you are max capacity. And you get the next ship upgrade license. Repeat until you max out. After that, you can eject them all through an air lock if you wish.

Edit the player_modes or whatever file to remove item drop on death, but increase pixel loss to 100%. Not great, but better. Need for food is only worthwhile if you decide to never buy and only farm, and even then only until your farm gets to a fair size. Don't hesitate to disable it.
