you should have them, but it's entirely possible to solo
just try and pull one at a time or as small a group as possible

I'm new to this game, playing warband, running around with my band of 10 or so soldiers who keep getting completely slaughtered by forest bandits and leaving me to fight 20 people on my own (and win thanks to how OP just stabbing fuckers with a spear from horseback is).

But I have a question in regards to the arena: How the hell are you supposed to do anything when the game just spawns 4 people who all cluster around you and beat the shit out of you? One on one I can fight forever, and I generally get up to around 10 fighters left before the game decides to spawn three people behind me who then proceed to all charge me at once and beat me down.

Is there something I should be doing here? Because I can't back away fast enough to get away from them and even with a shield its almost impossible to get a hit in when 4 dudes are beating you with wooden swords and quarter staffs.

The most basic native+ module out there is diplomacy. There are other fixes and tweaks that make the game better without changing too much, and this is basically a combination of the two.

also you can dick people, but that's both optional and secondary to the mod's purpose.
