I figured out it works mainly based on luminosity (instead of colour), which means that you need to darken the middle part for a splat to extend outwards.
Here's an earlier attempt with more uniform luminosity, where everything sort of shifts sideways instead.

You really don't understand. They are not the same but they're all Rei. For instance, let's say you love Rei Aleph (א) but a new clone of Rei, denominated Rei Bet (ב) is created.
They were exactly the same in their creation but the chain of events following is what differentiates Rei א from Rei ב . To say you do not love Rei ב is equivalent to not loving Rei א due to happenings completely foreign to Rei, and beyond her power. This is just too cruel. Also not loving Rei ב is the same as not loving a potential Rei א , which could even come to be an actual Rei א depending on how the events unfurl. I hope you understand now.

Next I'll work on actually moving a unit. Not exactly sure how I'll do that though. Right now each tile stores its neighbors to the immediate north/south/east/west. I was thinking I'd select a tile, look for whichever neighbor is in the correct direction, then repeat until I get to the destination.

Is it more engaging as a player to have to pick up the items themselves or to make the items auto absorb like in the webm? If you make them pick up the items themselves (by moving over them) should items only have a finite lifespan before blinking out of existence?
