He can't get an angle on the breech because it's pointed straight at him, and shooting the mantlet/gun is even more of a dice roll than shooting a drivers window.

on some occasions you can even be repaired after getting a death in rb air, if you badly crash on the edge of an airfield, but that's a different matter

Or if you run out of fuel and glide to a runway.
You can avoid it by shutting down the engine when you have a couple seconds of fuel left but the rare occasion I run out I always forget to do that.
