RALLY!

Hey Veeky Forums let's have a rally car thread!
Old cars, new cars, personal favourite cars.
Lately I've been watching FTT-Rally clips on youtube, great stuff!

>tfw no group B

>tfw no rally FB

What's the rally version of your current car Veeky Forums ?

rally miats

...

...

this thread needs more air

...

...

...

...

Here senpai even the french have good hops

just cleared my summer schedule to crew for a rally america team, should be pretty fun

we're swapping an STi drive line into the team WRX currently

...

My old science teacher had one of these, the guy was always fucking drunk

Where would that be ?

Cheats.

^This it better be in california

...

...

...

...

...

Why did they have to dissolve group B, this would have likely lost ever championship. But at least Jackie Chan would be happy

...

...

...

this season's schedule went to WA and OR but do people even rally in CA?

rally-america.com/events

this month we're doing some rallycross for fun in IL and MI and then I think there's Headwaters, Sno*Drift (summer), Ojibwe Forest, etc etc. We're also driving a non-spec WRX and E46 in some road rallies

...

Because of behaviour like in the pic. The latins couldnt be trusted to stay the fuck back from the road, and 3 spectators were killed by an RS200 with 20 more injured in Portugal. Plus the deaths of a number of drivers/co-drivers.

I really need to move up north kind of done with my state. And I really don't know remember some user posting about one in norcal maybe a year ago never looked into it cause I was working, now I wish i did.

And damn really a e46? Which motor are you guys using for it, hope its not one of the oil burners

...

...

...

Probably the most superior of all the the celica gt fours tbqh

...

I daily the E46 so aside from a supercharger install it will pretty much remain a road rally car. It just has the 2.5L M54 but at 132k with meticulous gasket replacements and fluid flushes it's extremely healthy

I'd like to have an E36 or a bugeye WRX to rally next season but I don't have much experience yet so I don't know which class I want to build for

...

the street car base is so much fun

...

No, Rally

Commercial versions are all good my man

...

Ayyy as long as its taken care of I'm sure that engine will do fucking wonder. And I always forget about the big market of superchargers for bimmer engines idk if those chargers are intercooled or not.

Are the regulations for coupes or sedans for the stages you race in? Could just get a 316i since their the lightest and cheapest. And I'm not to proficient in subarus as I'd like to but those are the pre face lift GD models your looking for. You live up north I'm sure theres tons of unmolested ones around there some where, better than solcal.

>no one posting the GOAT

Golf

B is for best

You are a god among insects. And we can be friends now.

...

whats the best platform to rally off of for 3 grand

think of the braps

youtube.com/watch?v=Y9sP4lRkCBY
mandatory

get an E30 or E46

>FR
>I6
>easy to get an LSD if yours doesn't come with one
>commonly found in 5mt
>lightweight
>sex appeal
>tons of rollers on craigslist and in scrap yards, abundance of all parts

for 3k you can buy a run down E36 M3 and another M3 that doesn't run at all for extra parts and body panels. it costs more than 3k to get caged and up to spec but you can do any grassroots rallycross without a cage

you can buy an old 2.5 RS or WRX for cheap too but they're pretty difficult to find

Check copart

some fwd car, will have more traction with power over the wheels.
you'll have to get rollcage, fire extinguisher, maybe chassis stuff like strut plate so it's stronger, probably seat with 3 point harness and some other things like with fuel tank too i think. then a trailer to transport car if where you live won't let you have all that road registered (and if you're only going to rally a couple times a year and not going to drive the car, no point getting it registered).
check regulations for where you are and the local place
you'll probably break parts too just rallying and it costs a bit just to enter.

might be better just to buy someone elses car used for track/rally, will save time and still be able to find something cheap.

>fwd justification general
Saddos, have fun pretending while I actually get to have fun

But some rally cars are rwd?
E.g. Ford escorts (MK 1&2) and beemers

>I actually get to have fun
Unless someone else takes the window seat.

>we're swapping an STi drive line into the team WRX currently

>using anything but engine, gearbox case and diff housing

Well I certainly shiggy dig my man!

>TUBORG

Either your a turbo fag or your tuborg bitch. Who wouldn't want to be sponsored by a brewery while your racing your silvia rs

Is there a more intimidating race car, not just rally car, than the last Audi S1? That and the Delta S4, but something about the S1 gets me.

My leig

Gorgeous.

The only right answer.

Fucking YuroBR ruined group B. Uncivilized fucks.

And they're still doing it. It's getting worse again. Fucking idiots.

How do we make rally great again?

>Dat numberplate
I love how my region is represented all over the world on car pics.

By having coverage of it. It's actually pretty good. Just can't watch any of it.

Cars that are different would be a good thing, though. One has strengths there, the other there. Goes for most racing.

>How do we make rally great again?
We have to make cars great again first.

its the cars. all are pretty much the same now. same general size/shape, same engine size/power all 4wd.

i love how it used to be most manufacturers turned up with whatever they happend be producing at the time, slapped some extra lights n it and went rallying

Group B is nice and all but I really love this one picrelated.
Wild little thing, nice sound.

I especially like this one, but it might be non-stock because of all the firing:
youtube.com/watch?v=IxIBDy1UjHU

Jaguar won monte carlo in 56 with this

>whatever they happend be producing at the time, slapped some extra lights n it and went rallying
Yeah well, science is a bitch.
There's no trial-and-error approach to racing anymore. It's all mathematics now.
The one with the best algorithms wins.

i mean it is faster, but everything is a bit cold, sterile, and calculated? i mean it could be just me jerking over old citroens that are most likely going to be left in the dust by any car on sale today.

what do we have to do? introduce executive car rally? limit modifications to extra lights, suspension and fat tires? and only 2wd. sort of want to see modern landbarges sliding around on muddy forests.

...or i can keep jerking to 60s baguettes

It would be nice, for every motorsport series (rally and GT, really), to have one class which is factory cars with safety shit and that's it. Gearboxes as they come, engines as they come, fuck, leave the interior for all I care. Just compete with actual cars, not carbon silhouettes that have nothing to do with what's on sale.

You can't. FIA and this fucking gremlin kike are ruining everything they are associated with.

>i mean it is faster, but everything is a bit cold, sterile, and calculated?
That's just the evolution of engineering. Cars are optimized for a certain purpose.

> limit modifications to extra lights, suspension and fat tires? and only 2wd. sort of want to see modern landbarges sliding around on muddy forests.
That's some nice ideas.
I'd also love a rally that is challenging the drivers instead of the engineers.
But at some point the professional drivers will bitch about the shitty cars not being fast enough, not turning well or some other crap.

>Just compete with actual cars, not carbon silhouettes that have nothing to do with what's on sale.

this a hundred times. imagine how fun lemans would be with a 5-series trading paint with an Eclass up front, all while being exactly like the cars parked outside the mall. this would actually be a really good way for manufacturers to show ho good their cars actually are, and not some special snowflake car that looks vaguely like one of theirs car but really isnt. and if you dont like endurance, just put the cars on Pikes peak or in monte carlo

That's just the evolution of engineering.

yeah, i guess you're right. but to me at least, its jst not as fun. but it is better. sadly

>I'd also love a rally that is challenging the drivers instead of the engineers.

There is the GT3 category. But nobody seems to want to enter it. And it's even less covered than WRC ;_;

> good way for manufacturers to show ho good their cars actually are
It would actually show that they invested a bit more money for quality parts instead of staying cheap.
Instead of taking the "good-enough"clutch, they take the "slight performance level" clutch and so on.

That would make the car more expensive on the market though and might stun their sale numbers.

It's really an incompatibility of the economic market and racing.
Most cars out there are designed for common driving. If you race them, it's just a matter of how the engineers considered some extra strain.
Building parts with more extra strain (better for racing) will cost more - development costs and material changes.

In the end the winning manufacturer would be the one who wasn't a cheap shit hungry for profits. That's totally antagonistic to economic strategies, I hope you see the problem.

> its jst not as fun. but it is better. sadly
It's also true for the common street-cars. Old cars weren't optimized for fuel efficient that well, they were rough sometimes like a wild horse.

Nowadays cars are cuck-horses who do exactly what you tell them, it's fucking lame.

well, you do raise a valid point. i guess?

but i feel i new car isnt something you have to treat with silk gloves. especially the manufacturesrs who want to market themselves as sporty (read BMW with friends) might have cars bit better built for these things? i mean it worked in the 60s...

or that might be the reason no one has really done rally with anything that isnt a hatchback or a compact sedan for 30 years

Actually the manufacturers make cars especially for this race class.
Making cars involves the engineers again.

I guess the only driver-challenging classes are amateur racing. People simply cannot afford high-tech here.

>especially the manufacturesrs who want to market themselves as sporty (read BMW with friends) might have cars bit better built for these things?
Manufacturers are just cowards who play it safe and want the financial profit.
The last car actually trying to be cool was the Toyobaru. But financial greed can be seen in this model as well.

To build a really remarkable car, the manufacturer would need to let go of financial gain and build a non-profit model. Where the expected sales just barely make up for the development and production costs. Just for the lulz so to say.

Banned from the Monte Carlo for being unbeatable.

yeah, you're making sense. what a shame really. but i still want rallybarges to be a thing again.

and about the toyobaru, i love that thing for what it is. light little coupe, meh power, good chassis and skinny tires. a car made only for shits and giggles, a car made not to move people, cargo, to be economic, safe, innovative. fuck that. its made to be fun. and of course hlaf of Veeky Forums despises it.

>Actually the manufacturers make cars especially for this race class.

As far as I know, the GT3 Porsche is a track chassis with individual teams buying in appropriate suspension and shit from outside?
Reiter, the racing team, made the GT3 Gallardo offroad worthy, not Lamborghini themselves.
I don't know, I haven't followed all of this, because I can't see them actually race.

>would need to let go of financial gain and build a non-profit model.

I wouldn't even go so far. The problem is that, in these days, simply less NET profit is considered bad. They make boatloads of money, but don't increase that number enough.
Usually there's ridiculous amounts of money left over regardless.
