From my experience everything from Platinum and below is "bronze" tier. There are obviously the exceptions as Ive ran into silvers who are far better than Platinums but on average only super(?) platinum has been consistently on point.

Smash is integral to the survival of the FGC - it's the most played and respected game.
We'll need to hope we can build the bridges with the Smash community or fighting games will die.
For the most part they already have. Melee does not appear at any US FGC major besides EVO, CEO and TFC. Sm4sh at FGC events has better attendance but no one is flying cross country to be at DtN or SCR or NEC, mostly just the local region showing up. (Smash 4 is by far the 2nd biggest game at DtN but the furthest player is from New Jersey)

Well there is also the poor scheduling with many fgc events with smash 4. This weekend alone had 3-4 medi big smash events on its own where most traveled too and even a japane qualifier for big house.
