Playing in East Asia in >EU4 tends to be rather simplistic and boring. This is silly, given that the era included a golden age for the Chinese, the pseudo unification of Japan, and most importantly: pirates.
1/4 -------- The Wokou
China historically suffered from devastating raids at the hands of the Wokou Pirates during the EU4 time period, yet none of this is effectively modeled, and there is no real way for the Chinese to stamp out (or for the Japanese to support) piracy in the South China Sea.
The Wokou are a pirate republic that represent the motley band of Japanese, Korean, and Chinese sailors that raided the coast. Their ideas focus around taking capitves & booty, with the end game focus of demanding tribute from vassal states.
As a shinto nation, they can't raid Japan, but in general they will make life much harder for Korean and Chinese rulers seeking peace in the Middle Kingdom.

The Japanese didn't have a monopoly on piracy in the South China Sea. Chinese pirates, such as Ching Shih (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ching_Shih) ravaged the coast for centuries.
Unlike the Wokou, who at least respect their fellow Japanese, the Haizei raid all nations with zeal. The Haizei have a late game colonist in their ideas to represent the attempts of Chinese pirates to colonize the Philippines in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Overall, play the Wokou if you want pure pirate shenanigans, whereas the Haizei have the potential to expand beyond a band of raiders.

3/4 ------ Chinese traders ventured to Malaysia and Indonesia for centuries before the EU4 period, seeking wealth and prestige.
The Lanfong Republic represents these merchants, and provides a psuedo-Venetian experience for players who want to rule through trade in the East rather than conquest.
For an expansionist middle kingdom or a avaricious Haizei brotherhood, they provide an attractive target for vassalization, as their ideas provide a very powerful economic base.

4/4 ------ Lastly, as more of a fantasy option, the republic of Zhenghai exists for those who want a different take on a South African experience.
Zheng He led the Chinese treasure fleet on a great number of voyages of discovery and trade. Several of these expeditions ranged as far as eastern Africa. Had the Chinese fleet attempted to cross the cape of good hope, a storm might have forced them ashore.
Zhenghai represents the colony that such a stranded Chinese fleet might found, and provides a colonial african experience as an Eastern culture. -----

The empire modifier to vassalage was a big mistake. Countries should be able to encroach on imperial territory via diplomacy, maybe with an option for the emperor to get a casus belli for non-members holding vassals in the HRE

Can someone explain to me why Argentina thinks the Falklands are theirs? I'm really struggling to understand. At no point have the Falklands ever been under Argentine control. What if you could annex entire civilized countries in one single war in games such as Vic or EU, like in HoI?
I always thought it was pretty dumb that you had to wait through truces every time you want to take a new region from the same country you had dominated entirely several times already. If said nation is seriously getting dominated hard every time with little effort, this scenario would pretty much make no sense whatsoever.
So you probably should be allowed to annex entire medium/small countries in one war, but suffer of a much higher infamy penalty than if you conquered these regions in separate wars.
Obviously, you would need to occupy the immense majority of their territory with a 100% warscore, otherwise it makes no sense.
Basically, it would be like a much more severe and demanding dismantle nation CB that puts you far over the infamy limit the moment you go for it, depending on the size of the country you want to annex.
And don't tell me that shit never happened historically.
