Pretty much. Tiers 6, 8, 9 and 10 can take AFT to buff their AA instead of DE if you want to do an AA build.

Torpedo Armament Expertise would be a nice finishing touch, but the regular gun skills are more important. Torpedo Acceleration would reduce the flexibility of your torps a lot - I wouldn't recommend it on a cruiser.

Try and brawl/close-range, as you cannot avoid AP hits, but you can heal back fires/HE and even floods/Torps. If in doubt, brawl it.
AP is much more effective against you than Yamato; even if your citadel is quite low in the water, (the gun caliber difference can still penetrate.)
Gross Deustchland has a tiny normalisation value, across both calibre of guns.
Do not sit bow-on, or you'll find yourself sitting behind two dead turrets.
Do not provoke the CV, even if you're Air Defense Config.
This boat is not H41, tIX is H41. This is (made up in the head of Westerners)
A lot of thought must be put into the choice betweeen 406 and 420mm, in fact, the 406mm is quite (strong/okay/has advantages)
The 406mm is recommended (as well as both fire flags) (fireproof and fire-chance boosting)
Gross Deustchland may not be very strong, but it isn't vulnerable (damage-soaking) boat; forget what (filthy white-ghost) said.
Overall, Gross Deutschland is too weak, it needs a buff. Recommendations include;
-128mm seconds with 20 RPM
-AA buff with additional 55mm mounts
-+2k hp
-25% 420mm HE shell damage
-Turret armor buffed to Yamato standards
-Speed increased to 33kt
-Steering down to 15 seconds (not sure with/without rudder mod)
-Base range increase to 25km
-420mm given 406mm rate of fire.

Their torpedos end up not being not really much better than the Americans at the higher tiers (where the US DD's torps catch up on usefulness and range, and start to be able to invisitorp) because the ones with really good range are slow and get spotted from a mile away so even baBBies that only start turning when the torps get spotted can dodge them, and the actual ships themselves just aren't as good as their gunboat cousins.
And ultimately the torps don't make the ship, especially when you end up having to knife fight other DDs a lot for caps and stuff.

Yamato's guns are good enough to overcome the lack of numbers, 9 16" guns just wouldn't be able to keep up with the other's at T10.

You got it wrong - low and mid tier IJN DDs are the only DDs able to launch torps undetected, at least in their respective tiers. On high tiers players are better and ships are generally faster and turn easier so it's much harder to land a successful torpedo hit. Meanwhile, USN and commie DDs are generally only good at fighting other DDs on low tiers, but are a major pain in the ass starting from ~T6 (e.g. Farragut [VI], Benson [VIII], Kiev [VII]).

IJN DDs are gods until you hit T6/7, though.

The Japs get better Krupp values on their shells and they're heavier so they end up with better penetration, especially at longer ranges (I could be wrong about the specifics but I'm pretty sure it's something like that).
At least that's how it's been with the ships we already know, and from the limited stuff we've seen of the großgermanium seems to support that.

Because Mutsu is garbo and in T7+ gunboats become dominant. If you want a ship that can torp as well as fight than USN is the way to go.
