I think the miata market is a bit inflated but you can buy an e36 for near pennies. The biggest problem is mostly just the M3 had an lsd.

LT1 with a 4T60-E trans. While this is awesome and manly, I would have done the SHO swap.

It's a GM LS4 5.3L V8 from a 2006-2007 Chevy Monte Carlo SS, 2005-2008 Pontiac Grand Prix GXP, 2006-2009 Chevy Impala SS, or 2008-2009 Buick Lacrosse Super.

The LS4 is very different from the other LS engines in that it has the transmission bolt pattern of the V6's. The same transmission bolt pattern as the Fiero's original transmissions.

So there's a lot of transmissions that will work, but the most popular are:
4T65eHD - 4 speed automatic. All factory LS4 cars had this transmission.
Getrag F23 - 5 speed manual. Has to be from a 2000-2002 Chevy Cavalier or Pontiac Sunfire with the 2.2L pushrod I4.
GM F40 - 6 speed manual. GM's current FWD 6 speed manual whore. For the variant with the proper bolt pattern, must come from a 2006-2009 Pontiac G6 GTP.

There are many others that will work. Any transmission capable of bolting to a 3800 or any one of the 60* V6's will work.

V8 Fiero swaps are nothing new (pic related). GM prototype Fieros were tested with V8's so it isn't an issue space-wise. There's plenty of room for a V8 without modifying the chassis/frame rails.
