What is the consensus on the rx-8. how many miles is it really reliable until?

what is the consensus on the rx-8. how many miles is it really reliable until?

58k miles

Tends to grenade befor 90k.

58k isn't many miles but it depends entirely upon how much the driver knew about operating rotaries

They can be trashed in 30k miles if driven by someone who doesn't know about the special treatment they require.

Average? Around 100k until the apex seals are toast.

Keep in mind, they are easier to rebuild than non-spinning-dorito cars.

>apex seals

>how many miles is it really reliable until

It stopped being reliable as soon as it rolled out of the factory.

In the UK i should add a full rebuild at a specialist is about £3k

The cars are also about £3k for a decent example so it can be best to just buy one with a blown motor and get it rebuilt.

Reliable? yes when you maintain them. They last like any other car.

But every single one of those more then likely didn't have an owner that checked the oil regularly and brapt the living shit out of it when it was low regularly.

Ones with rebuilt engine and the later models are a lot more reliable then early ones. They will last as long as piston engines, whilst the early cars that haven't had a factory repair will go by 100k at most. Rebuilds are reasonably cheap and easy though. Get it rebuilt, put an aftermarket OMP in and your golden

yeah I guess that's kinda hard to predict. especially from a dealership.

drive it, start it up cold, start it up hot and see how it handles both.

If you're still worried do a compression test.

Check the service history.

If the seals are going they tend to have problems on hot start-ups but if you really want to assuage your fear get a compression test.

how can you tell if the seals are faulty

Compression test.

If the car literally won't turn on when the motor is hot, the seals can be faulty.

Can be other problems unrelated to the seals, but that would be an indicator

Dont pay 8k for a 10 year old base model dont care how many miles.

Why does an apex seal kit cost 300+ dollaroos? I can't imagine the actual materials of the seals costing any more than $15

Buy from carmax and get the extended warranty.

Or just buy a V8 mustang so you actually have power to go with your shitty mpg.

There's just too much trouble for what you're getting out of it.

>V8 mpg
>Weaker than v6

Less retarded than buying a new fr-s. That's about it.

you didn't mention
>ZERO torks

not op, but what's the general consensus on a mazda6?
it's an '06 model with 102k miles, surprisingly well-kept (so it appears) if it makes any difference

If you're going for special snowflake points, rotaries 100% win across the board
>Rotors themselves look cool
>You literally have the highest redline on Earth
>They are relatively rare

What's the highest rotary redline? I bet there's a DOHC, water cooled, inline four with a higher redline.

Stay away from. 04-06, 07 is a big bump in reliability, 09+ are the best
