3-1 was good, 4-1 was good.

However after 4-1 I felt a sense of "God dammit this shit again?" because it felt like they were setting Kristoph up to be the big baddy throughout the whole game just like Dahlia was. So I was really pissy to play through all of AJ after the first case and have my thoughts ring true when Kristoph is the final boss.

They could've tried something that would've shocked everyone that led to the dark age. Like what if some big shot forensist was forging his reports and shit to get away with crimes etc. But nope the Dark Age was just Kristoph and Phantom.

The general consensus seems to be that cases are longer and more boring. Well I believe I have an idea as to why. It's three major things.

>Everything's too formulaic
It's not hard to miss how much of a rut the standard murder trial has gotten stuck into. There's certain elements that people insist all cases have, whether consciously or not, that make cases too similar to each other. Every case is a full acquittal or bust, every case must have a detective and the AOV Standard™ amount of witnesses, every detective cross-examination must end in requests (which is ridiculous in it's own right, but that's another story), every postulation and accusation must be a full blown theory with motive, means, opportunity, the kitchen sink, and a nice little bow to wrap it all up in, and NEVER EVER try to end the trial early. Not to mention how every witness cross-examination must go on until you've found "the contradiction", not taking into account what comes next, which brings me to my second point

If you look at the AA games, as well as some of the earlier good (and short) cases, you'll notice that people don't spend hours arguing a point in a circular loop of bickering that spirals into eternity. They instead segue into their theory, counter-argument, call for next witness, verdict, whatever it is, and the whole thing advances. And while the lack of people being able to segue (as well as their opponents not allowing them to) is bad, it would be much easier if it weren't for the fact that...

This is probably the biggest problem. What kind of trials have we been doing for the recent past months? They sure aren't improv, considering every witness testimony and opening statement is supposed to be written before the trial even starts (as one of the earlier mentioned rules), and it definitely isn't pre-written, since there isn't someone who wrote everything by themselves who knows what the fuck is going on. No, this is worse than a pre-written, it's a pre-written where everyone is hiding facts from each other. The worst offenders are this are witnesses, especially "mystery witnesses" who say fuck all about themselves until their literally up on the stand. In the early days, you would know who the witnesses were, what their deal was, and the general gist of what they were witnessing. Now, no one knows what the fuck the deal with any witness is, and the time up to their reveal requires the court to walk on eggshells so as not to disrupt their "established facts" that they've told no one else about. This is especially apparent whenever the murder call comes up, because it always ends with the prosecution and detective going "ask the witnesses" when neither of them even know if the witness is going to fucking answer. Everyone's bending over backwards to avoid "boxing a witness in", when they should be fucking rolling with it anyway. It's improv.

Witnesses need to give the gist of what they're going to be witnessing so we're not going in like the blind man in the world of the deaf.

Also, small side rant. Detective became a staple role in order for there to be a non-biased source for confirming asspulls and theories, but now it just regurgitates facts and spends time that could easily be shortened by the prosecution explaining the case themselves like they normally do in the games. Hell, if you want to stay true to the games just have the judge announce all asspull test results through a "bailiff" delivering the results, or hell, make someone the bailiff and they can deliver the results themselves. No need to waste time that could be spent on witnesses.
