Yeah, I'm new to this but god damn, even after 40 hours you'd think I'd be closer to top place instead of 4-7 seconds down.

And then when you do get that amazing lap, you never get it again or crash trying to get it.

I know skill plays a part but it always feels like setup is 90% of the effort.

I don't know, for me set up might help get a few tenths down, and feel more safe (i.e. not oversteer at the last corner).
I know I'm slow because I don't know how to attack the corner properly, I'm shit at braking.
When I race against fast guys and later I revise their line and braking points and style it's just smooth and consistent.
Mine is aggressive (bad) and I tend to either lock, brake too late, or I can't gauge brake % around the corner entry, so I'm bad at hitting the apex unless I break 100%, then coast to apex.

You have to make the car drive to your style.

Brands hatch is probably one of the smoothest tracks in existence, it has literally no bumps.
