Every single Durango that I have seen from that gen had inevitable trasmission issues. Including both of mine.

The 4 and 5 speed RFEs are terrible junk.
The 4 speed torqueflites are not great but ok. They're basically a 3 speed 727 with an extra gear(OD). What I would do is find a regular 727 and transfer case from a Dodge truck or Ramcharger from 72-93 and swap it. You may have to fab a cross member and get different driveshafts but the trans should bolt right to the 5.2L or 5.9L
