The M5 and M3 are derived from the normal 5 and 3 series. Tuning up a commuter car, even if BMW does it does not make it a sports car. It is a sedan or coupe with added sportyness.
Sports cars are designed from the ground up to have performance be their number one characteristic. Corvette, RX-7, Lotus, etc.
