The lore on Gundyr is pretty great, he's basically not even a real antagonist, he's basically what could've been the protagonist, but he gave up and decided that he should just smash noobs forever. Essentially, he's one of those guys who stayed to PvP instead of finishing the game.

I really like how the DS3 tutorial is completely chill and then all of a sudden it goes OH SHIT IT'S INDEX GUNDYR.
That is one hell of a difficulty spike if you think about it.

It's the best tutorial boss of the series, it took From five games to understand how to do it.
DeS and DaS1 were shit mandatory bosses
In DaS2 you had the choice between two rather easy bosses that were kind of unintersting
In BB you had the choice between two incredibly hard bosses for newcomers, bosses so frustrating that a lot of people new to the series just gave up at this point.

Gundyr in the other hand is the perfect balance between challenging and fair, is enjoyable while also allowing the new guy to progress trough a fair amount of get gut early.

2 has a few more optional first bosses. Not like any of them but pursuer is cool, but just saying it.

I wouldn't call Vanguard Mandatory or Asylum Demon shit.
Asylum was actually good for teaching new players mechanics like drop attacks and running away.

It's hard to call it "one of" when wast majority of weaponry in base game were at least as good with the exception of kirkhammer and steak driver maybe.

Gundyrs second pus of man stage is complete bullshit though. Just massive lingering hitboxes and what the fuck am I even looking at animations that kill you in two hits.

The only time I died to gundyr was my first playthrough. Even my subsequent deprived starting playthroughs I killed him first try. Club is ez mode against him too because he's weak to strike. It's just not as aparent as it was in dark souls 2.

This can be interesting.

He's the only real combat challenge int he tutorial.
All of the mooks are just dummies that you can test the attack, parry, block and dodge controls against, but you don't actually need to know how to do any of those things to progress through the tutorial. Gundyr is just a wall that exists to make sure the player has learned at least 1 or 2 of the game's basic controls, basically just "how do I dodge" and "how do I attack"

He's a bit of a pushover as far as tutorial bosses go. I mean, sure, the asylum demon had a big blindspot in his ass, but if you messed up he'd take of 3/4 of your HP in a single attack. Gundyr tickles by comparison.

Vanguard is just here to kill you quick, that's not the base for a good design.
Asylum demon is just ... there you know, just a big mass of shit with 2/3 moves, nothing really happens during that fight.

I wouldn't call any of the DaS3 waifus cute, to be honest. From just forgot how to make faces, or they're using horrible textures that highlight all the issues in the face. It's probably why more people have fapped to a bird that wasn't even shown ingame than an actual character.
