You can use it on a space station as a secondary oxygen generator+fuel source, since (as you mentioned) astronauts might not like green sludge that might or might not have mutated into a toxin-producing strain due to radiation you can keep it as a fuel source/part-time oxygen generator only while foodstuff plants are handled separately.

Ethanol fuel cells still produce CO2 but they are more efficient than internal combustion engines+alternator

There are no other methods. We'd have found them in the last century if there were. Particle accelerators are the ONLY way to make them in existence. Pauling traps are the ONLY way to store them, and they're not foolproof either because the universe forbids perfectly stable fields.
