Well we got two options. Either collecting the emeralds is unimportant and just a special side quest, or it's important to the plot and super sonic has an obligatory boss fight.

I honestly can't remember! I haven't really played that much since I was a kid. I know sonic was my favorite but Shadow had the best and most rewarding playstyle.

The Piko Piko Hammer is supposedly magical. So, I think Amy should use it like how a wizard would use a staff or wand. Like how Thor controls thunder with Mjolnir. That would be awesome.
