I tried to be more serious and make a better story, but it lacks the original goofiness. I just can't find the right tone, and it makes me very sad.

It's understandable, tone is extremely difficult to keep consistently good the longer a piece gets. Short stories are much easier to write.
Dunno if you're still going with the long quest, but if you are and it's getting you down, probably best to just wrap it up.
