I would think most people in WT play tanks, per numbers on thunderskill, but how many people from World of Tanks decided to switch over? Not many I think.

You're completely wrong. Most players in-game now would say they want (or at least, before the announcement) naval battles in the game more than any other single thing (French tree, Italian tree, Jap tanks, whatever).

The appeal of naval combat is the iconic ships and ship classes that are as much visually appealing as they are with gameplay. It's the same as tanks and planes, it's not just that you get to play them and fire guns at others, it's that you get to play on modelled semi-realistic versions of iconic vehicles from WW2 and the Cold War.

You lose ALL of that if you go 'nah player vehicles only up to destroyer' (possibly not even including!). It's an emphasis on arena fast-paced gameplay that Gaijin obviously want their game to take the direction of.

They killed tank sim, they pushed and pushed for esports and shitty competition tournaments, they design the game predominantly around arcade, they're wasting their time on shit memes like Crossout and now they want to take a hugely anticipated game-mode that everyone in this game is expecting and most want to play and turn it into a fast-paced arena battle mode.

Their arguments for doing so don't hold up in the slightest because of the success of tank and air battles, and it won't draw any substanial number of players into the game.

And even if it miraculously does bring in new players, they'll be playing the Arena Boats(tm) game mode and not air or ground - which is also what many other current players will do. It will damage the rest of the game and its queue times even more and not even be an appealing or popular game mode.

If naval fails, War Thunder has no hope.

If it somehow miraculously succeeds, ground (and possibly air) have no hope.

Adding fully fledged naval mode wouldn't save the game either, nobody would switch over from WoWS like they didn't from WoT. It would only split existing playerbase further.

If naval fails, nothing will change. You will still play your planes and tanks like you did before.
