that's probably since for most nations the only "professional" soldiers were the knights and men-at-arms though the english had a sort of professional army with longbowmen, since they were multipurpose troops by the 15th century

Right I know about the longbows, but my point was that the thing that made the swiss and then the spanish hot stuff was that they were disciplined and fought as a unit, unlike knights who botched it up too many times to count because they COULDN'T do that.
