this happens all the time in VNs with side images. Even professionally made Japanese ones. It's maddening. It's bad enough they insist on having the same character twice on the screen but at least have them match, reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

It will seem smaller than it is if you only look on LSF or /evn/ — there's quite a few developers who primarily share outside these places, such as on Twitter or gamedev communities.

Depends on what kind of 2D style you want. If it's a heavily stylised look you want, consider that many artists don't actually draw/paint individual blades of grass, nor individual leaves (unless they're in the extreme foreground).

In the recent country road BG I did there's no AO on the leaves. I rendered the AO pass for the full scene but didn't apply it. Instead I saved it separately, rendered an mask for the bike, and applied the AO to just the bike in Photoshop.
AO is just a rendering trick that doesn't take materials into account. Shadows will still work properly though. Blender Internal has an option you need to check called "receive transparent shadows" (or something like that.) The catch is you need to check this option on the material that's having an alpha masked material cast shadows onto it. Not the actual alpha masked material itself (although checking it on that is a good idea too!)
FWIW I used Blender Internal for the forest BG you linked above but I used Cycles for the recent country road BG.

Yeah, if you select a bunch of objects one of them will be the 'active object' (it has a slightly lighter highlight than the others). When you join those objects together the resulting object will have all the modifiers of the active object.

yeah that's the one I had in mind. Was playing through it recently and every time the dialogue came up all I could think about was how jarring the sprite expressions were because of it

I can understand the double sprite thing, specially with widescreen textboxes that would be too long otherwise. It gives you the speaker quickly instead of relying in color-coded naming shit, or zooming in the sprites, which gets tiresome after a while. But at least they should make the expressions match.

Two of the artists I've hired had me sign a contract, both only required my real name. They would get that much information from my payment anyway.

Their contracts mostly stated what I can and cannot do with the artwork, they just needed my signature to confirm I understood. I don't really blame them, I had no presence in the dev community when I had hired them.
It would make it easier to ruin my reputation though, producing evidence that I understood the contract but still went against their wishes.

Apparently, spaces make renpy unable to find the images. Maybe it's my instalation. It's outdated like two years. Try with a new version.
In case you have to change the case, don't do it manually. Google a simple script to rename files and tweak it. I'm sure there are thousands. It will take you 10 minutes to learn how to do it instead of wasting 2 hours doing boring ass renaming. And try if it works with mock files, in case anything goes wrong.
