i've never played TTK trials so i've never gotten my hands on a doctrine or any of the other new guns and armor for that matter

I'll be mad if that's the case, but it's a strong tendency of shit writers to kill of the old guard to hype up "THE ALL-NEW ALL-DIFFERENT THREAT NOW!!", and Destiny's writing is woefully bad and made even worse because they can hide behind the grimoire.
