I completed the first difficulty and now I'm on the 2nd... but it's the same thing, barely any noticeably more difficult. Is hardcore fun?

I don't get hardcore for anything but a short race with a lot of brutal map mods in this kind of game. It's amusing to have as an option as a throwback to classic roguelikes but I just don't see the appeal.

Permadeath has appeal in classic roguelikes because the game can buttfuck you from the instant you enter the dungeon. Every level has real risk to your character which can sometimes make a short run where you overcome some crazy insanity in the first few floors feel just as exciting as a fight against the final boss the first time you see it. When you make it deep into the dungeon, it's very exciting because it really doesn't happen every game.

Path of Exile (and the Diablo games) are not like that. Even a brand new player to the genre won't find very much difficulty in the game for at least several hours of gameplay, and experienced players rush through normal and cruel in only a couple hours, and don't really slow down by much more when they hit merciless.

A death in a classic roguelike meant the start of a completely new adventure that could take a completely different turn from the outset. A death in Hardcore Path of Exile means a list of chores taking up a few hours that is the same every time before you get to the playstyle you want for the character in the random map runs that actually add risk to the game.

not to mention that, being an online-only game, most hardcore deaths in path of exile are not due to randomized and memorable crazy shit, but power outages, sudden connection losses, and game server issues.

Even most of the deaths due to the actual game are things where you go from 100-0 in the span of 2 frames and need to watch a replay to realize "oh they had increased AoE and applied a resistance reduction curse that quadrupled the damage I was taking from a DoT I didn't even realize I had"

How many Demigod's Dominances have you won? Anything under the number of 20 puts you in the filthy casual category by the way.

The point of hardcore is that death is permanent and forces you to start over.

When you pick hardcore you are saying "I'd rather re-run normal and cruel to build a character from scratch than run a bunch of maps on the character I built to earn that experience back" since both styles of play cost the same amount of time per death eventually.

Because you can't just play again with a new character like in a roguelike. The enjoyable part of PoE is arguably the endgame, so having the time buffer between the endgames of two characters (as in, normal, cruel and most of merc) that you have in HC just seems detrimental.

Once you hit your 6L in shitcore, you're set for the rest of the league. The same cannot be said in hardcore. You will never lose 30+ ex worth of maps with a single death in shitcore, even at level 99 but you can easily lose 30+ ex worth of gear with a hardcore death.

But how is that relevant? The extra penalty of having to level again is nothing compared to the time you actually spend in end game content, it might take you like 6 hours to reach maps if you're fast and you could easily stay there for 120+ hours if you don't die.

The thing with a roguelike is that there's a lot of randomness to the character and its path through the world.
In PoE you have a set path up until maps. Your past character progression is irrelevant once you hit a certain level. Pretty much. Nobody uses gear they found leveling normal-merc a3 in maps.

Do you not know that characters have shared stashes in hardcore? If your hardcore character dies, you still have most of your built up currency for your next hardcore character (unless you overinvested in a character who you then pushed too hard)

Either way it still just comes down to time. You lost N-hundred hours of grinding for exalts to buy your set, a softcore lost N-hundred hours of experience gathering on maps that they spent a lot of currency to acquire. It's the same shit except you prefer spending time rerunning normal/cruel/merciless/easy maps without your gear on some low-level budget build while the softcore player prefers spending time running harder maps with their actual build and gear.
