both the character and his unusual situation can be interpreted in lots of different ways, it encourages people to do crazy things with their artwork

I think it's because he's a mystery. We only get the bare-bones information about him, and we're left to fill in the blanks. People enjoy interpreting him with dark, void tones. This makes him alluring to people who like those sort of things. The fact that we don't quite know what he's supposed to be like means that people can draw him in just about any fashion they want. Creative freedom, in other words.
