We've tried 3D games for almost 2 decades now. It hasn't worked. And even the people that liked Generations are more interested in Mania for the most part. Sometimes a series just needs to stick to its roots. That being said, you'll always have new expiramental 3D sonic games, so it's not like they're taking the new games away or anything.
Id love to see the other characters done up in official 16 bit mega drive sprites

You can do a 2D sonic game in modern graphics and fine ways to incorporate the extended history and characters.

Honestly I'd rather they just release Genesis-esque games on handheld or as download for console independent of their 3D games. Just have a separate team working on some side scrollers while main team takes their time on 3D.
And when I say genesis-esque I mean gameplay wise. Because I wouldn't mind them using those games to mess around with having different characters like Rush and the advanced games did (other than Sonic, knuckles and tails)
