R134a Thread?

>just fixed a/c in my car
>mfw cold air after a month of suffering

Just tried refilling family shitbox (2001 Accord, had it since 2002), seemed to help, but gotta see how it holds up.

Tfw you can't even buy r134a in Australia without a licence. Feelsbadman

Drove my wrx from new york to pennsylvania with no ac in 90 degree humid weather. Never again.

>and then he said "it's an automatic"

R134a is going to be banned soon

your shitting me. You sure you dont mean R12?

Nope. You need a refrigeration licence. Can't even buy hychill.
>muh safety

>tfw live in england
>tfw constant air conditioning

must suck to live somewhere with real weather

>haven't had an ac vehicle in over a year and a half
>drive 35yr old truck
>air leaks through floor pans
>velour seat, so I die in the heat
>what the fuck are power options

>rode in friends 2015 something something BMW
>cold air was nice
>fancy buttons
>sorta comfortable
I'll stick to my shitbox honestly, just can't wait to put the ac system back together some day.

I installed AC pipes into my 94 Civic a few days ago. Gonna finish it up by installing the condenser and hope everything works out. Tired of all the sweating.

Just got mine filled up... 1.9lbs of sweet gas

>have an old landbarge
>Factory ac
>r12.jpg
>system's been empty for decades
>want to refill it with 134a but muh leaks
>dont want to replace the entire system

help

I need help guys, my 88 ford uses r12 and I'm to poor to do the 134a conversion. I heard it's illegal to manufacture, but not buy. Any truth? Also, if so, wherecani get it? Thanks

Go to a mom and pop mechanic. I would bet that most if them have a few dusty cans knocking around that they would sell you

It's cheaper to convert. The last place I knew that had old-stock R12 was selling for $55 a can. And that was 3 years ago.

I just went on ebay and there are plenty of people selling R12

>Old Dodge rolls 300k miles and rear axle seizes
>Decide it's time to trade up.
>Get 2010 Mercury Mountaineer with keyless start and climate control
>Get out of work and start car, by the time I get inside it it's chillier than my fridge

All the wasted years. I never knew how wonderful this could be.

Once R-147LBGT comes out, R-134A will be banned and then we are all fucked.

>recharged the system last year
>Worked fine for the longest time
>Recently A/C randomly turns off
>Think I have a leak somewhere
>Can't figure out whats up with it.
>Middle of June in Texas

Looks like I just have to charge it once a month.

>not using R-1234YF

fucking plebs

>A/C been having problems for months
>at high RPM system would die
>4-banger so high RPM'S is what it does
>remember filling up system last year and no change
>find unused can quick recharge in garage
>decide fuck it, I'll try anyway
>system is low
>filling fixes all problems
>excited to feel working A/C
>it's cooled off enough that A/C isn't needed

I am pissed off that the weather is nice now.

i just bought a can and pretty much shot its contents directly into the atmosphere because of a leak so massive

>Wanting your car to explode
No thanks.

I have a 240sx, paid like $120 to get an A/C refill. Is the AC supposed to no longer work or run out only after a few years, maybe 3-4? I'm suspecting leaky and old pipes or something.

>expect first post to be two cans of refrigerant fucking eachother

yall need to step up

That's only if you use off-brand r134a that's made in china.

Chinese produced r134a has been known to be cut with large amounts of propane. Propane actually works great in 134a systems and as a refrigerant in general but has the small problem of being highly flammable and possibly explosive in a automobile environment.

>MFW: bought some 134a from Amazon that was intended for non-commiefornia so the damn hose kit couldnt puncture the can, and had to use a nail to poke the hole.
>MFW: tried to buy a different hosekit on Amazon, and the description said: "WILL NOT SHIP TO CALIFORNIA"

fuck this state bruh

>tfw have tank of r-12 for your old cars

suck it normies

What's involved in converting r12 to r134a? Is it just the high and low side valves that need to be changed, or are there more parts to replace too?

>tfw i have working air but still drive with the windows down in 100 degree heat just because i like it

Nope, if there are no leaks it should last forever.

You're supposed to vac the system first faggot.

All the seals need be replaced and the oil cleaned out of the system. Dryer needs be changed as well but that's a given. Oil needs to be changed too.

VN

>low on refrigerant because leaked for years
>finally replace low pressure a/c line
Can I just grab a bottle from the store to refill or do I need to get it vacuumed out for a bit first?

Fuck you, toyota

>A/C blows warm on driver's side and not as cold as it should (feels 5F warmer than it should) and has done so since 2013
>car was only 3 years old at the time
>opening windows and driving at 30 MPH brings in colder air than what would come through my side if I turned the A/C on
>don't know whether it's just low coolant or some door inside the A/C system is fucked

fuck you, toyota

>$10 deposit per can
>for any size can
>two small cans is $20 deposit
>one XL can is $10
>buy large can and just spray the extra into the air
fuckin commiefornia

Vaccumed.

>23 year old shitbox
>unemployed for 4 years
>start new job in April
>no AC
>charge it without vacuum it first
>works but the compressor is noisy AF
>no cabin filter
>one week later, AC smells like rotten pee every time I start the car
>decide to wait for the refrigerant to leak completely before:

open the system
remove all oil
change the compressor and drier/accumulator
clean/wash the condenser
take out evaporator and evaporator box and clean/wash/disinfect it
make some sort of DIY cabin filter
basically $300 and half a day of work

>mid June, AC still smells like shit but it's cold as ice, no leaks anywhere
>never been so disappointed my shitbox is not broken

It's not getting R12 because I can get that shit on ebay, my concern is actually having the unit filled without it all leaking out, since I doubt it's had anything in it since before i was born

>fill it up
>find leaks
>repeat

I actually charged my AC system with Redtek R12a which is apparently propane based. The molecules are larger which makes leaks much less likely.

Also the amount you put in the system is so little it could hardly do any damage.

where do you live? I'll keep an eye out for news stories involving a fatal car explosion.

Not necessarily. Picked up a new automotive AC textbook to educate myself. The SAE designed fittings have an acceptable leakage rate of 1/4 oz per year per fitting.
