What is a nice brit 1st car. I am 25 so insurance won't be that bad.
Old BMW if you know how to fix shit yourself. And believe me you will need to.
MX-5 if you absolutely must have RWD and you want to /learn/ how to fix shit. Do have pocket money to fix the inevitable sill and arch herpes.
Fastback/Saloon Mazda 3 if you have family. Go for diesel if you're on the motorway a lot for a long commute.
Focus ST or mazdaspeed 3 if you have dependents yet still want to go fast.
Golf GTI is an alright choice, but for where I live at least, has negative connotations.

I should have given more, I work for a shot blasting company, so I can clean shit like rust and get smallish paint work done cheap/free. I work with cars and bikes a bit, nothing too mechanical but I want to learn, in fact its important I do for my job, so fixing is a plus.
What I don't understand while going through insurance is that a 1.0 Corsa costs about £800 a year for insurance, but a mk5 Ford Cortina I was quoted £700.
Surely the group 1 car should always be cheaper under the same circumstances?
