Mages are fun and are always a safe choice for damage dealing. If you want to keep playing Alliance then go for it. If you want to make a Horde character than you should.

I just got WoW, made a Wargen, and am in the second starting area (after I got turned into a Wargen), and I have yet to see any other players. I know the game isn't as popular as it used to be, but geez. I'm also on Emerald Dream, any ideas?

The worgen starting area is only available to worgen, that combined with worgen not being very popular makes it so that few people are there. You'll probably see more people once you get to stormwind, im pretty sure ED is well populated

Neither are great for mage. You can do orc hardiness and take shimmer but you're not going to get amazing use out of elf silence.
