If you ever want to pvp don't play vanguard. Skirmisher pve will get buffed eventually but vanguard pvp will never get buffed for years.

Epics are bind on pickup outside of transferring them to other characters.
You can still buy Legendaries in the Auction House with gold, plus stuff for enchanting, and reinforcement can cost a few million if you get unlucky.
Mostly people buy Demon Challenges and avatar stuff with gold, though.
