Mobile games are different than console games. A menu based game is perfect for mobile and that is why so many successful movile games use them. Playing a simple rpg like pokemon or padx on your mobile phone would not fit as well and isn't suited to very short play times.

PaD's problem is that its not pokemon, and that people not playing it will always look at it as candy crush or a pokemon clone. pokego is popular because most people wont spend 250 for pokemon and a ds, but they will spend more on a "free" phone game. and pokemon will always do gangbusters.

also PaD doesnt have a true mascot character like pokemon. for awhile it seems the colored slimes were it because of the nod to dragon quest style rpgs. most of the monsters are ether gods or rpg cannon fodder, not much original content that isnt based off some mythos. tamas are feeding fodder for shits sake, so they must have had tamas be the mascot used to "awaken" monsters in the anime or something. the ds game might bring some to the phone game and visa versa, but pad seems to be stuggling for popularity since whales will put up most of the money

People in America grew up with pokemon. The people playing gokemon go watched the tv show or had some cards as a kid and that's why they played the game. If it was a new franchise with the exact same mechanics it would have gone nowhere. Pad is doing well and it had to carry itself with things other than nostalgia.
