I mean, I hear that this place is a nightmare and the boss even moreso, but am I supposed to take this as a good omen or was the doggo not supposed to be that hard at all? I'm playing a Str build so that I can carry a greatshield, and I had a +7 Dark Sword infused Heavy, so that probably had a lot to do with it even though I still rolled through most of its attacks.

Now that you're reading this is there any viability in a Farron Flashsword-and-Soul Greatsword-only build?

I was just doing a proof of concept with a Witchtree Branch +6, so needless to say I didn't win a single fight. But still it seemed to trigger people like nothing I've ever seen before. Like Darksword-tier resentment.

Flashsword was hitting for about 98 damage most of the time. What could I expect from a properly-kitted build? I hope it's at least 200 for having no hyper armor and being parryable.

Elkhorn is top fash, I use it on almost all of my characters.

I think the top damage you can get out of flashsword against the average pvp target is like 140-180. I'm pretty sure it never crests 200 unless you fight someone naked or that's wearing -ABS gear.

Soul greatsword is pretty useless, though. It's so slow that you can consistently roll through on reaction, even greathammers are faster, and the hitbox doesn't linger at all so it's fucking terrible at rollcatching. Plus, unlike DaS2, you can actually punish soul greatsword if you roll through it with some fast weapons (eg. katanas)

Parry shields a shit but I think they look okay with this armor setup. I hate the buckler a lot when it's on a character's back though, so maybe target shield?
I do like Elkhorn so maybe I'll just stick with it.

I use it as a surprise attack with my immolation tinder. I basically run sages ring+2, bellowing and young dragon rings and it hits for 150-250, depending on the guy. If you are using it as a replacement for a straight sword you will be disappointing, but as a surprise attack out of a staff or a immolation tinder, its bretty good.

Power within is pretty shit in this game. The damage boost is lower, the HP drain is higher and it's obviously no good in pvp because you lose 2/3 of your HP for free while the other guy just backs off.

Go up to 15 dex and you can use Gundyr's halberd instead of winged knight. It has higher AR on a pure str build.

Don't know about PVP, but against monsters in NG, with Court Sorcerer Staff +10, all three damage boosting rings, Crown of Dusk and Scholar's Candlestick offhand, Flashsword does 300-400 and Greatsword does 700-900.

Unless the DaS2 DLC was mostly cut content (or unfinished stuff that they couldn't tack on before the publisher rushed the game out the door, à la DaS), then Ashes of Ariandel is either half the size of DaS3, or it introduces massive changes to the base game (that won't happen).
Or the engine they're working in is so unwieldy that they need all that time to make it even halfway decent.
