Team building is actually important because of the way some of the defensive mechanics work. Logia users can make themselves intangible for a while, but this is countered by haki users.
Some characters have conquerors haki which they can use to extend the hit stun on their moves and go for combos they couldn't normally. There also character with their own unique gimmicks like Law wanting to set up his room, and Kid with his scrap arm.
Assists that give a bunch of different "perks".
Characters have different types of special movement to get past zoning or play keep away.
There's even combos to training boar of you're into that.
