How good is this? Also should I even bother taking basic rider courses or just practice and take the test at the DMV?

Can you wrench? If not, that bike is not a good choice.
If you can afford, try getting something newer.
Of course the courses are a good idea user.

Finally getting some long overdue maintenance taken care of after not riding for over a year..... I've almost forgotten what it feels like to be on a motorcycle at this point. I'm going to have to spend some time in an empty parking lot practicing evasive / low speed maneuvers and emergency braking.
