I'm working on making resources moddable, but since it's not something Nick has asked for, things that he has asked for take priority. The framework is done, now I have to work on all the little resource-related tentacles in the code.

I like it though, does quite well against massed missiles and requires less space than a large laser system. Still has the problem it goes kaboom if you sneeze at it though.

Godspeed you magnificent bastard!
P.s. may i suggest a slew of new structures that allow to expend resources in exchange for a increase in growth of other resources? Example: steel mill takes a bunch of natural and a good amount of fuel, increase Metal growth on a resource zone (the reasoning is that there is a bunch of native cluster of metal, by building a steel mill you can also make use of the ore) Another thing would be to make crystal growth trays require material feedstock (either natural or metal but metal is more efficient) to produce crystal (it can be used anywhere contrary to the steel mill) Also biodiesel production, natural->oil at a bad rate (useful if you are oil-starved and you have waay too much natural)

Prepare to be disappointed The bottom is completely flat and featureless.
Seeing as this is my first experiment with a hull of this shape, it works surprisingly well. There was no need for a keel or anything. Very stable and naturally sits at a good depth.
Charles James
Interesting, thanks. I thought you had some sharp keel or hydrofoil setup or something since it's decently fast.

It barely sits three metres deep in the water, even with the hydrofoils off. I think tumblehome-style hulls just have a lot of internal volume and buoyancy. Very little boat beneath the water means very little drag, even though it's practically shaped like a brick.
Mason Morris
one resource isn't even that big of a deal, it'd be nice to have oil as well too but it's not like it breaks the game
Charles Thompson
But all the other shit does break it. It's pretty clear Nick doesn't give a shit about making a good game anymore, or at least doesn't care about doing anything past adding/removing random shit that no one's asked for.
Levi Morgan
Please explain your mindset here. Are you complaining about the detection mechanics? Because they add some extra strategy to ship design, which is always appreciated. And if you don't like the detection mechanics, you can turn them off in the game settings.
Are you complaining about the unified resources? Because the only resource that actually mattered was metal. The other four resources were so abundant that they never limited construction in any way. They were just unnecessary complication.
Bentley Campbell
brb copypasting, because it apparently needs to be copypasted >let's repeatedly balance towards huge fucking battleships that deliberately exploit glitches that don't fix, then make a campaign specifically meant for low variety, small vessels! >let's "rebalance" the old cannon system which filled its own low-power niche by making it basically exactly the same as the other system, except more powerful and slower and with higher recoil, again favoring huge systems for huge vessels! >let's throw literally all of that out the window by making a new weapon system that is stupidly simplistic, uses replenishable resources and completely avoids all defenses! >let's make a sensor warfare centric update that adds a lot of independent systems that take up a lot of volume right after adding huge, cheap slabs of armor that out-do literally every other armor in the game, but weigh fucking tons, once again favoring enormous vehicles while at the same time kneecapping every previous vehicle >then let's completely remove logistics and resource management after balancing around it for years, for basically no tangible advantage whatsoever!
Josiah Diaz
/egg/ needs to make its own better version of FtD, how hard can it be?
We'll make it using Unreal engine 4, with multicore support so that the physics runs at a decent speed.
Well, seems its not too difficult. A shame UE4's physics are ass.
Wyatt Clark
egg needs its own engine
Robert Brooks
At least that way we could write it in Fortran and have it run at a decent speed.
Christian Mitchell
Oh cool, so rather than thinking as an individual you're going to copy-paste some other guy's half-baked criticism? Actually think for a moment.
More than half of your criticism revolves around this issue you seem to be having that big ships beat small ships.
I mean, fucking... Yeah, they do. What did you expect?
I would argue that detection mechanics push things back in the opposite direction, as smaller vessels can evade detection from larger ships and pick them apart with stealthy weapons such as torpedoes and missiles. The big ships you keep complaining about simply can't evade detection.
And again, about the resources. If you had actually played the game, you would realise that there was only one material of any actual importance, and it was metal. The other resources were, like I said, unnecessary complication. No point in them existing. They served no purpose.
Natural and oil were always available in excess, crystal was renewable, and scrap was effectively just metal.
And don't talk some bullshit about logistics being removed. You still have to manage fuel and ammunition and move resources between areas and vessels. Anybody with a brain just used the generic "store everything" crates for their five different resources anyway, again removing any point in them being five different resources.
Logan Rivera
Which SE server are you playing?
Brody Reed
Okay, sure, Nick.
I'm okay with resources getting axed, but not to just one. "Raw material" and "Natural oil" would be just fine, but a universal resource basically removes any importance of certain resource spawns and replaces it with basic fucking attrition. Need more fuel for your ships? Just make another refinery on top of a magical fucking universal resource. Need more AI components? Flip a switch and let it gather the magical fucking universal resource instead of magically turning it into oil, instead. It can pass on a crunch point of perspective, but holy shit is it fucking stupid from a fluff viewpoint.
I think the main issue I have with the game having multiple resources is that there's not multiple ways to gather them.
Re-adding oil would be a good idea, but only if you had to go to special oil-only resource zones to gather it. If collecting oil is just a matter of placing a block which is basically identical to the other resource-gathering block, then there's no point in having it in the game.
John Williams
But you know what would be even better? Four resources. One, "natural resources". It can be gathered only on land, and takes up wood and part of scraps, possibly even a catalyst in the oil conversion process. Two, "ores". Can be gathered both in the ocean and on land, used for metals and part of circuitry, as well as manufacturing scrap and ammo. Three, "natural oil." Can only be gathered in sea, can be manufactured into fuel and ammo. Four, "scrap". Can only be manufactured, cannot be harvested anywhere in the world except enemy and your own ships. Makes up the majority of advanced components, including really heavy armor.
Fucking solved. The problem with the original resource system that literally all of them could be just mined in some ambiguous circle in the middle of the sea, which is kind of dumb. By simply forcing the player to expand just to be able to get all the necessary resources, logistics would actually fucking matter. That way, having land territory will matter even if you don't make a lot of wooden ships - you need it to create fuel. And you can't go fully land-dwelling, either, because then you'll have no fuel at all.
