I think I've asked about that before. It would be a problem if they pushed it too much, given the limitations of telling a story in a Classic game, but they did put some emphasis on the story aspect of MAnia in what they've said so far.

In fact, they said that "Sonic has a reason to be revisiting the stages", which kind of sounds like it could fit with Project 2017.

I mean, just look at the gravity-defying lava rooms in HTZ where lava just conveniently doesn't spill out into the hallway. Or the "Well, we made this level for a scrapped zone, let's throw it in Metropolis" Act 3 BS. Or the pit in Mystic Cave. I could keep going.

They are outdated by today's standards, but they were amazing back in the late 90s.
